Columbia River Wraparound Supports and Services
Individualized Supports: Wraparound focuses on the unique strengths and needs of each family, giving Wraparound Teams the freedom to identify the most effective interventions on an individualized basis. Wraparound supports target specific goals and outcomes identified by the Team, and may require additional funding to be approved by the Project Director and the Flex Fund Committee as appropriate. Creative supports developed by Wraparound Teams have included purchasing a family swim pass to build family togetherness, coordinating a summer internship with a veterinary clinic for a youth who loved working with animals, and arranging for the principal of an elementary school to pick up a youth who had a hard time getting to class each morning. These individualized interventions can be cost-effective, and because they are specifically tailored to their needs of a youth and family, they offer the greatest impact and support. Resource Identification: In addition to Wraparound Planning, Wraparound Teams work to connect families and youth with appropriate resources throughout the community. Supports may include financial assistance with utility bills, community education classes, or scholarships for specific trainings or workshops. Caregiver and Youth Advocacy Services: Columbia River Wraparound partners with the Oregon Family Support Network (OFSN) to provide comprehensive advocacy services for participants involved in Wraparound services, as well as for non-participating families struggling with mental health challenges. Services include bimonthly youth and caregiver support groups, one-on-one peer advocacy, advocate representation at Wraparound Team Meetings, and access to trainings specific to the needs of youth and caregivers. In addition, youth and family members are encouraged to participate on advisory boards and other leadership forums to help improve mental health services delivery on a local, state, and national level. Family and Individual Therapy: Mental health therapists specializing in youth and family therapy to provide individualized counseling and consultation to families participating in Columbia River Wraparound. Therapy sessions can take place in the office, at home or school, or in another location chosen by the family. Parent Coaching: Qualified Parent Skill Trainers are available to help parents gain new skills related to building a positive, structured, and safe environment. Parent Skill Trainers usually meet with families in their homes and provide hands-on, one-on-one support for caregivers. Evidence-based parenting curricula, such as Parenting Wisely, the Parenting Project, and reading material such as The Explosive Child, may be included as an additional resources available through these services. Youth Skills Training: Youth participating in Columbia River Wraparound may be eligible to receive one-on-one support from our staff. Activities focus on enhancing a youth's social and communication skills, while giving the youth a chance to participate in activities that they enjoy with a positive adult role model. Community Education Project: CEP is a self-contained classroom at The Dalles Middle School for identified children in need of additional behavioral and emotional supports. A Mental Health Therapist meets with youth weekly. A Family Care Coordinator is on staff throughout the school day to provide additional support to youth. Most youth in the CEP classroom also participate in Wraparound planning services, making family involvement a major component to the success of this innovative, school-based project. Early Identification and Referral Services: Columbia River Wraparound Mental Health staff provide consultation services to agencies working in early childhood education and childcare in Sherman and Gilliam Counties. Supports include classroom observations, recommendations, and referral coordination. . J-Wrap: A partnership between Wasco County Youth Services and Columbia River Wraparound, J-Wrap is an innovative project designed to address the mental health needs of youth involved in the Juvenile Justice system using a Wraparound approach. Each youth involved in J-Wrap has designated members on his/her Wraparound Team, including a Probation Officer, Mental Health Therapist, Family Care Coordinator, Youth Coordinator, and Family Advocate. Respite Care: Funds may be available to support respite care for families who need a short "break." Respite care may be provided by a trusted neighbor or child care provider. Columbia River Wraparound also has resources to arrange for professional respite services as appropriate. Referrals to Higher Level Care: Through the Oregon Addictions and Mental Health Division Intensive Treatment Services (ITS), Columbia River Wraparound accepts referrals for appropriate youth to higher levels of care, such as day treatment education programs and residential facilities as deemed necessary by qualified Mental Health Professionals.
