Windows NT Set-Up Instructions for Online Services

Instructions

  1. Verify Dial-Up Networking is Installed
    1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop
    2. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon
    3. Depending on what you see:
      • If you have a window that asks you to install Dial-Up Networking:
        1. This means Dial-Up Networking is not installed and you must install it

          NOTE: You will need to have Administrator privileges on your computer and have your Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM to perform the following steps

        2. Click on the Install button
        3. When the "Add RAS Device" window appears, make sure your modem is showing in the window, and click on OK
        4. When the "Remote Access Setup" window appears, click on Continue
        5. After the process finishes, you will be asked to restart your computer; make sure to do that (and remove the CD-ROM from the drive)
        6. Continue on with Creating a dialoregon.net Phonebook Entry
      • If you have a window that says "The phonebook is empty":
        1. This means Dial-Up Networking is installed
        2. Click on OK to enter the New Phonebook Entry Wizard
        3. Continue on with Creating a dialoregon.net Phonebook Entry
      • If you have a window labeled "Dial-Up Networking":
        1. This means Dial-Up Networking is installed
        2. Continue on with Creating a dialoregon.net Phonebook Entry

  2. Creating a dialoregon.net Phonebook Entry

    NOTE: If you currently have a phonebook entry for dialoregon.net, but it is not working correctly, use these instructions to create a new one with a different name, and it should work

    1. If you are not already in Dial-Up Networking, then:
      1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop
      2. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon
    2. If you are not already in the New Phonebook Entry Wizard, then:
      1. Click on the New button
    3. Type in "dialoregon.net" for the name of the phonebook entry
    4. Do NOT check the box that says "I know all about phonebook entries..."
    5. Click on Next
    6. Put a check in the box next to "I am calling the Internet" AND "Send my plain text password..."
    7. Enter the local Online Services phone number in the Phone Number box
    8. Check the box that says "Use Telephony dialing properties" if you have special dialing options specified (such as for disabling call-waiting or for dialing from behind a PBX)
    9. Click on Next
    10. Click on Finish
    11. Click on the "More" button
    12. Choose the option to "Create shortcut to entry..." and click on the "OK" button to put the shortcut on your desktop
    13. You do not need to make any other changes, as the default configuration for Dial-Up Networking works with Online Services
    14. Click on the "Close" button
    15. Close the "My Computer" window
    16. Continue on with Using Dial-Up Networking

  3. Using Dial-Up Networking
    1. Double-click on the icon on your desktop which is the shortcut to your dialoregon.net Dial-Up Networking connection
    2. The "Connect" window will come up
    3. Type your PPP login name (e.g. "Pjdoe") in the "User name" box
    4. Type your password in the "Password" box
    5. LEAVE THE "DOMAIN" BOX EMPTY
    6. DO NOT CHECK THE "SAVE PASSWORD" BOX until you have successfully connected and only do it if you do not want to be prompted to type your password each time you connect
    7. Click on the "OK" button
    8. Your modem should dial and connect

      NOTE: If you receive a message saying "Error 629: The port was disconnected by the remote machine", make sure you have typed your user name and password correctly and have left the "Domain" box blank

    9. You may now start up any Internet programs you have such as Netscape or Internet Explorer

  4. Disconnecting Dial-Up Networking
    1. Double-click on the icon of a small phone located next to the time display on your task bar
    2. Click on the "Hang Up" button
    3. Click on "OK" to close the Dial-Up Networking Monitor window
